Hearing Aids Overview
What is a hearing aid?
A hearing aid is an instrument that was developed for the hearing impaired to improve hearing acuity, by amplifying sounds that would otherwise be inaudible.
Hearing aids are a small electronic instrument that are typically worn inside or behind the ear. The hearing instrument receives sound through a small microphone and converts the sound into an electrical digital code. It analyzes and adjusts the sound to an individuals hearing deficit before it’s transferred to an amplifier. The amplifier increases the intensity of the signal and then converts it back to sound and delivers it to the ear through a speaker.
How can hearing aids help?
It’s important to know that hearing aids can't restore normal hearing. However, as mentioned above, they can improve hearing acuity by amplifying soft sounds and allowing the wearer an opportunity to hear what has been missed.
Hearing Aid Styles
Are there different styles of hearing aids?
There are three basic types of hearing aids. The least advanced is the basic digital hearing aid. They generally require manual adjustments such as rotating or pressing a volume control up or down, in some cases a push button is available to change listening programs that have been customized to individual needs. In contrast, a premium or advanced hearing device automatically adjusts to changes in the patient's individual environment. It also makes automatic changes in synergy based on the sound being detected. The hearing aid wearer also has an option to make manual changes but is not required and usually not recommended. It’s important to remember that as hearing aid technology level increases, so do the level of features and options.
The hearing devices that we offer come in many different sizes, colors, and designs. Many of today's hearing instruments are sleek, miniaturized, and innovative offering a wide array of solutions to hearing aid wearers.
